Following Croatia’s defeat to England in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the Croatian players gave an honest assessment of what happened in Dallas. Here are their post-match comments.

Luka Modrić

"The first half was quite evenly balanced. We conceded cheap goals, managed to come back twice, and then it was a shame what happened in the second half. The match restarted, we conceded immediately, and that killed us again. We didn’t have the strength to come back a third time.

The penalty? It was careless. I did touch him a little, yes, but enough for it to be given. I didn’t see him, unfortunately. It was a careless mistake, but we move on. What’s done is done.

We managed to come back twice, but the third goal killed us. We have to turn the page; we still have two matches left. I’m confident things will improve and that we’ll achieve at least our minimum objective here. There were positive aspects in the first half, but that third goal hurt us badly and we didn’t know how to recover from being behind again.

They created a lot of chances, especially from set pieces, where we suffered quite a bit. We have six days to fix those issues, and I’m sure we will. I’m confident we’ll be much better."

Ivan Perišić

"There were positive things, but cheap mistakes cost us the chance of finishing first. Now we go into the next two matches aiming for second place and looking at where we went wrong.

Still, there were plenty of good things. In tournaments, scoring the first goal is important, and that was the difference today. In the next two matches, we need to score first and then, hopefully, control the game."

Luka Vušković

"Overall, there were some good moments and quite a few bad ones. We have to learn from them and prepare for the next match. This is a tournament—you have to get ready and give everything you have.

I don’t really remember the incident; maybe I could have reacted better myself, but what’s done is done. We move forward," said the Tottenham player.

"What did my teammates tell me after the match? To keep my head up. There’s not much else to do now. We lost to a top-class team and now we have to give everything we’ve got."

Joško Gvardiol

"It’s certainly not a good feeling. We came back into the game twice. We know England’s quality and the kind of team they are, but it simply wasn’t enough.

Especially the third goal we conceded—I think there was a lack of concentration there, and everything happened very quickly. There are still two matches left. Nothing is over. We need to keep our heads up."

Petar Musa

"Scoring a goal feels really good. We knew they were strong from set pieces, and now we need to analyze the game and correct our mistakes over the next two matches.

It’s not over. Heads up. Zlatan Ibrahimović said he’s supporting Croatia—that’s nice to hear. My family and many friends were in the stands, and it was great to see so many Croatian supporters as well. It’s just a shame the result wasn’t what we wanted.

In the second half, I simply didn’t have any energy left..."

Dominik Livaković

"We conceded four goals, came back twice, but after that we just couldn’t do it again. We’ll analyze the match and prepare for what comes next.

Bellingham’s goal at the start of the second half was the turning point. They caught us by surprise.

The retaken penalty? I don’t know how far off my line I was. I’m sorry about it. Maybe that save would have given us momentum and changed the match in our favor. If only we’d had a little more luck...

There’s not much I can do about it now except focus on the retaken penalty when it happens."

Martin Baturina

"It was a good match. We played well in the first half, but we conceded some silly goals. England were the better team and deserved to win.

We showed that we can compete even with the strongest teams, but we were missing something small. Thanks to Perišić for the assist. I’m happy about the goal, but disappointed that we lost."
